			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A number of holiday events are being planned for the first weekend in December by various organizations and the Port of Los Angeles, in addition to the 50th Annual Harbor Holiday Afloat parade, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 1,  starting at 6:00 PM.</p>
<p>If your club, marina, business or organization is planning an activity, we&#8217;d like to know about it, so we can add your event to this list. Please submit your information to news@laharborholidayafloat.org and we&#8217;ll add it to the schedule, along with a link to your website.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">With the theme of<strong> “50 Golden Years of Holiday Lights”</strong>,15</span><sup><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">th</span></sup><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;"> District Councilman Joe Buscaino will preside as Grand Marshal for this year’s sparkling spectacular of boats that will celebrate the parade’s golden anniversary and all the great features of the Los Angeles Waterfront and working Port.</span></span></p>
<p>Entries will be judged and trophies will be awarded in the following categories: Theme, Traditional, Humorous, Holiday Spirit, Best Animation, Commercial, Most Original, Children’s Choice, Judge’s Choice, and Grand Marshal’s Award. Yacht Clubs will be vying for the coveted Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the club with the most entries.</p>
<p>Entry Fee is $30.00, which also includes admission to the Awards Brunch, to held at the DoubleTree Hotel, Sunday, Dec. 2 @ 10:00 AM.</p>

Toys will be collected by participating host clubs and distributed through the Rotary Club&#8217;s Christmas Eve Poverty Program and the <a href="http://www.laparks.org/" target="_blank">Los Angeles Dept. of Recreation &amp; Parks</a>, for the Banning Park Holiday Event. This is also an opportunity for the harbor-area business community to show their support and get noticed.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="size-full wp-image-506 alignleft" title="uss_iowa" src="http://laharborholidayafloat.org/wp-content/uploads/uss_iowa.jpg" alt="USS Iowa in her berth at San Pedro" width="260" height="194" />Built in 1940, the USS IOWA served our country for over 50 years, in WWII, and the Korean Conflict. Known as <a href="http://pacificbattleship.com/" target="_blank">&#8220;the Battleship of Presidents&#8221;</a>, no other battleship in our nation’s history has been host to more U.S. Presidents than the IOWA.</p>
<p>Now serving in her new mission as a floating Naval Museum, the IOWA has been designated as a Judging Station<a title="Parade Route" href="http://laharborholidayafloat.org/parade-route/" target="_blank">(see Parade Route)</a> for the parade, hosting a contingent of school children that choose the recipients of the <a title="2011 Trophy Awards" href="http://laharborholidayafloat.org/2011_awards/" target="_blank">Children&#8217;s Choice Trophy</a>.</p>
<p>We are pleased to welcome the USS IOWA and the <a href="http://pacificbattleship.com/page/mission" target="_blank">Pacific Battleship Center</a> as participants &amp; supporters of our annual on-the-water event.</p>

<p>Joe Buscaino is the newest member of the Los Angeles City Council, elected on January 17, 2012 to fill the vacancy left by Janice Hahn, following her successful bid for US Congress.The 15th Council District includes the Port of Los Angeles and the communities of San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway and Watts.</p>
<p>Councilman Buscaino has lived in the 15th Council District his entire life, and is a first-generation Italian-American, whose parents emigrated from Italy over 40 years ago, in pursuit of the American dream.Joe and his wife, Geralyn, a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, are raising their two children, and their dog, Rocco, in San Pedro.</p>
<p>Prior to his election to the City Council, Buscaino served for 15 years as a police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department.He has served on Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Harbor Area, the San Pedro YWCA’s Racial Justice Committee, and the Advisory Council for the Los Angeles Watts Summer Games and is active with Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and various Italian-American organizations.</p>

Sponsored by LA Port &amp; others, the parade draws 1000&#8242;s of spectators, usually on the 1st Saturday of December.</p>
