Planning Committee announces 2018 parade details

As the 56th Annual L.A. Harbor Holiday Afloat parade draws nears, the planning committee is pleased to announce that details have been finalized, the parade permit filed and parade banners and posters hung throughout the harbor area on the first weekend of November.

This year’s theme is ‘Holiday Magic.’ The parade of brightly lighted and decorated boats will be held on Saturday, December 1st beginning at 6PM in the Port of LA’s East Basin and ending approximately 8:30PM in the Cabrillo Marinas in the Port’s outer harbor. A Port Police boat will head the lineup that includes Grand Marshal, David Arian, VP of he Port of LA Board of Harbor Commissioners, the tall ships Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, LAFD fireboat, other harbor working vessels, the parade’s banner boat and approximately 60 decorated recreational boats.

Officially entered, decorated boats will be judged in a number of categories by panels of judges at three locations along the parade route, including Banning’s Landing, the Battleship IOWA that will host children from the Boys & Girls Club who will select the winner of the Children’s Choice Award, and the SS Lane Victory in the Outer Harbor. Skippers wishing to compete for an award can fill out the application at a skippers’ meeting, or send a completed application by mail to Pacific Unicomm, Berth 203 #9, Wilmington, CA 90744 or fax (310) 549-5818. Entry forms will be available at all marinas and yacht clubs in the Port of LA during the month of November.

Non-judged, decorated boats are welcome to join the parade, however it is highly recommended that skippers who plan to participate attend the skippers’ meeting at the Plaza at Cabrillo Marina community center on Wednesday, November 28, 6:30-8:30PM for current parade route information and instructions from the Port Police.

Skippers should slow their speed while passing Banning’s Landing and California Yacht Marina – Cabrillo Marina to give our cameramen and narrators sufficient time to film the parade and to provide information about their entry to the viewing audience.

Winning entries will be announced and awards presented at the Skippers’ Breakfast and Awards Presentation on Sunday, December 2nd at 10AM at the Plaza at Cabrillo, 224 Whalers Walk in San Pedro.

The annual LA Harbor Holiday Afloat parade is also a fundraiser and toy drive. All toys and proceeds go to harbor area youth organizations and nonprofits for their holiday events. Whether you participate in the parade or not, please consider making a donation or drop off toys at the Skippers’ Breakfast, or at California Yacht Marina – Cabrillo Marina, San Pedro, or at Pacific Yacht Landing, Berth 203, Wilmington. Toys and funds will be distributed during the second week of December.
